The area of Detroit, Michigan, was one of the most affected areas of the recession due to the dramatic loss of automotive jobs during 2008 and 2009. According to MLive.com, five thousand people marched for jobs through the city this past Saturday.

Reverend Jesse Jackson and the United Automotive Workers (UAW) president Bob Jing led the March. Additionally, a number of Michigan’’s Democratic politicians also joined in the march, which was also used to commemorate the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’’s march on the streets of Washington.

"We have a devastating crisis in Detroit," Jackson told the news provider. "200,000 people without jobs. That’’s a crisis, but it’’s also an opportunity to build, to-rebuild."

According to the news provider, the state of Michigan has lost nearly half of its manufacturing jobs over the past decade.

SMW Automotive, an auto supplier that makes parts for Nissan and Volkswagen, recently announced that it will be opening a plan in Shelbyville, Tennessee, according to Nashville Public Radio. The company, which is based in Michigan, will create more than 170 jobs in the new facility over the next five years.

"Once again, the ripple effect from the presence of anchor companies like Nissan and Volkswagen has leveraged significant investment," said Matt Kisber, the state’’s economic development commissioner, told the Tennessean.

Auto body school could be a way to get into the sector, as many hiring managers view the education program as an experience that could qualify workers for certain positions, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Vice President Joe Biden recently met with workers at a Jeep Wrangler plant in Toledo, Ohio, to talk about the success of the auto bailout, according to the Boston Herald. Biden told the crowd that approximately 431,300 jobs in the automotive industry were lost during 2008, but the industry has since rebounded with 76,300 jobs.

"It’s a huge reversal and one we’d never have seen had we listened to those who told us to walk away," Biden told the news provider.

Analysts have hope that the sector will continue to add jobs in the near future. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in the automotive industry are expected to grow by 5 percent through 2018.

Some jobs that are coming back to New Hampshire are in auto parts manufacturing, according to New Hampshire Public Radio. Some workers in the sector are finding that a number of sales are in the state of New Hampshire.

John Morrison, who is the chairman of Hitchener Manufacturing, told the news provider that sales in the state and their offshore plants are up by more than 30 percent.

Additionally, other companies are bringing back workers who were previously laid off during the brunt of the recession.

"Two years ago we laid off roughly approximately 100 people, about 20 percent of our workforce. Probably about half of them are back now," David Rowell, vice president of sales and marketing for Foss Manufacturing, told the news provider.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it may be a good idea for individuals who are looking to get into the sector to sign up for auto body school, as most employers regard these programs as preparation for positions.

Boeing Company announced that it has plans to open a manufacturing facility to work on defense programs either later this year or in early 2011, according to the Associated Press. The site will be located in Illinois.

"This facility’’s proximity to (Boeing defense) headquarters, the presence of an established, skilled work force, and the infrastructure at MidAmerica Airport make it an ideal choice as Boeing looks for opportunities to expand our core business and ensure our St. Louis site remains competitive as we meet the high-value, low-cost needs of our customers," Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing’’s chief executive officer (CEO) of defense, space and security, told the news provider.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the manufacturing sector added 36,000 jobs during the month of July. There have been 183,000 jobs added in the industry since December 2009.

South Florida is seeing a great boost in automotive sales, which some are taking as an indication that there could be more jobs on the way for the industry, according to the Miami Herald.

The area of Miami-Dade, which is Florida’’s largest labor market, is hoping for job opportunities in the automotive sector, as the industry has been at a hiring lull for the region since its peak year in 2007. The news provider reports that employment opportunities are currently 33 percent lower than the peak year.

For individuals who are looking to get into the automotive sector, auto body school may be one way to go about getting a foot in the door. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, people can complete automotive school in as little as six months.

Continental Corporation, an automotive supplier from Troy, Michigan, is planning to hire 100 new workers at its Fletcher, North Carolina, plant over the next seven months, according to the Detroit News.

Company executives told the news provider that these will not be temporary jobs, as they are looking to retain workers for an extended period of time.

"When we hire people, we look for them to be with Continental for a long time; the average length of employment is about 10 years," plant manager Bobby Nelon said in a statement. "I am very pleased that we have the chance to offer such stable employment to the people of the western North Carolina area."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in the automotive sector are expected to increase by 5 percent through 2018.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released the unemployment rates by state, and Michigan, which has the second highest unemployment rate in the country, was found to create significant jobs thanks to the auto industry, according to BusinessWeek.

The news provider reports that employers in Michigan added 27,800 jobs last month, which is the most the state has added since last October.

"Manufacturing has been playing a big role in the recovery and certainly is helping Michigan, with the improved health of the auto industry and auto suppliers," Steven Cochrane, director of regional economics at Moody’’s Economy.com in West Chester, Pennsylvania, told the news provider. "What we have to realize, though, is that that impact may be lessening as this year comes to a close."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Michigan’’s unemployment rate is currently 13.1 percent, followed only by Nevada with 14.3 percent.

British wind turbine blade technology company, Blade Dynamics, has been looking into establishing a new plant in New Orleans, Louisiana, which would potentially create more than 600 jobs by 2015, according to BrightEnergy.org.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal told the news provider that this new plant would be a step in the right direction for the state.

"Renewable energy and green manufacturing is one of our target growth industries that will help to diversify our economy, attract more businesses to Louisiana and, most importantly, create more jobs for our people so they can find the same kinds of opportunities here that historically they have had to pursue in places like Dallas, Houston or Atlanta," he said.

President Barack Obama has commented before that he believes the green sector has the potential to create 800,000 new jobs for the country by 2020.

While the state once had the highest unemployment rate in the country, Michigan has been experiencing a surge in job opportunities. Michigan’’s unemployment rate dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 13.1 percent, according to the Associated Press.

Analysts noted that the state has been drastically increasing jobs in the manufacturing sector, which had taken a big hit with the economic crisis of 2008.

"It coincides with the auto industry’’s comeback - 55,000 people hired year-over-year for the first time since 2000," Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm told the news provider. "We are starting to see some movement."

The manufacturing industry has been experiencing a comeback in recent months. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that so far in 2010, more than 183,000 manufacturing jobs have been created. Over the past month, the sector had added 36,000 positions, with automotive companies being one of the main reasons for the increase.
