Students at one high school in Illinois recently got a chance to learn about the culinary arts and food services industries though a unique partnership with Smithfield Foods Incorporated.
The job shadowing event involved a group of 16 sophomores, juniors and seniors from Morton East High School in Cicero, who were able to get some practical hands-on job experience and tour the company's Saratoga Food Specialites research and development labs through the Learners to Leaders program.
Jim Bejna, director of operations for Saratoga Food Specialities, said workers were able to talk to the students about their future career opportunities while learning about specific jobs duties.
"This was a wonderful group of young people, and we enjoyed the opportunity to talk to them about some career possibilities," Bejna added. "One of the great things about our Learners to Leaders partnership is that students learn about career choices available to them when they finish their educations, and businesses will have access to talented, skilled and motivated young leaders."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for those who have completed a culinary arts program including chefs and food preparation workers are expected to grow by 7 percent through 2018.
