A group representing a number of professional hair salons in the Indianapolis area is speaking out against proposed legislation that called for the elimination of certifications to work in the cosmetology industry.
Ingo Beauty Salons, which has a director of salons listed on its website, said that while the bill may have created many new jobs for professionals who have gone to cosmetology school by creating increased competition, it may actually have done more harm than good.
"I believe that the bill is like a two-sided coin," Nicki Berotto, marketing director at Ingo Beauty Salons stated. "On one hand, it would increase the amount of jobs in a poor economy, but on the other hand, it could put our hairstyles at risk. That is why we (Ingo Beauty Salons) are against such bill."
The bill was recently withdrawn following an outcry from the professional beauty services community, however, Ingo said that while hair dressers feel their protesting paid off, they still feel threatened by the proposal until it is completely "taken off the table."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for cosmetologists and other personal appearance workers are expected to grow much faster than the average of other occupations, by 20 percent, through 2018.
