A proposal for a new privately funded convention center complex could help create hundreds of new jobs for those with with culinary management training and other hospitality-related skills in the New York City area.

The plan for the Aqueduct racetrack in Queens, which would include an inside track for expanded gambling and a 3,000 room hotel, is gaining support by Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said he would support the project in order to help create more jobs and boost state tax revenues, according to the Washington Post.

Cuomo said the new center is needed to help the city attract larger trade shows and conventions, citing the city's Javits Center as too small to be a major competitor in today's competitive marketplace.

In the meantime, lawmakers are also looking at approving a constitutional amendment that would legalize non-Indian reservation casinos as another way to generate hospitality and service industry jobs in the state.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities for food service managers are expected to be good through the end of the decade, especially for those with a two- or four-year postsecondary degree from a culinary training program.
