Car maker BMW has announced that it will increase production with a multi-million dollar investment at its South Carolina plant, a move that is expected to create 300 new jobs for those with experience in skilled trades.

The company made the announcement during a recent ceremony in Spartanburg to commemorate the completion of 2 million vehicles since starting production in the U.S. in 1994.

Frank-Peter Arndt, BMW group board member in charge of production, said the company will expand its X-model family line over the next several years.

"I am delighted to announce today, over the next three years, we plan to invest nearly $900 million. With this investment, we will be able to produce 350,000 units here in the mid-term," Arndt stated. "This is one reaction to the rising global demand for our BMW X Models."

BMW said that with the addition of the 300 new jobs this year, the plant will employ nearly 7,500 workers at the Spartanburg facility.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities for motor vehicle and parts manufacturing are expected to be better for workers with advanced postsecondary training in the skilled trades.
