It appears as if those with health information technician training may have luck finding work in the new year. A report finds an overall recovery pattern in the healthcare sector, with more positions expected to open as providers get ready for the new electronic health and medical records (EHR/EMR) federal mandate by 2014.
According to Medzilla.com, an industry employment and information website, healthcare IT is beginning to create new labor options for job seekers, and will add more than 50,000 workers through the end of the decade.
Eric Marx, vice president of healthcare IT for Modis staffing, said the industry is seeking qualified workers with an understanding of medicine and technology.
"There are a lot of qualified people out there, and the gap they have is that most CIOs in hospitals are looking for clinical backgrounds that understand what medical jargon is," Marx added. " There's a premium on security folks and on folks that can take large amounts of information and get some value out of it, so business intelligence and data warehousing are significant."
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities for medical records and health information technicians are expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, by 20 percent, through 2018.
